Why its Okay to Criticize Islam (In Addition to Any Other Religion!)

Islam is Fashionable

The Atheist Crusader's most recent essay on how Islam is really no more ridiculous that Christianity and other religions is completely correct. However, that simply covers Western Conservatives' views on Islam. This essay is about the Left's love of Muslims.

Let me first say that I am personally very liberal, however, I can't stand the idea of political correctness. Also, Islam has been on the rise recently. It is a commonly accepted truth that Islam is the fastest growing religion, with The Guinness Book of World Records stating that in 1990, there were approximately 935 million Muslims in the world, increasing to 1.2 billion by 2000. This is in contrast to The World Christian Database's 2007 study that indicated that the annual growth rate of Christianity is 1.38%. Immediately after 9/11, there was an anger towards Muslims all around the world, especially from America's Right. After the initial anger cooled down, it became politically incorrect to criticize Islam in any way. The Left-wingers claimed that Islam was a loving, peaceful religion, while the Right claimed the exact opposite. The truth is, as the Atheist Crusader so eloquently put it, Islam is no worse and no more violent than Christianity. Another thing that has seemed to happen is the observation by many in the American Left that when one criticizes Islam, its "racist". In the U.S., one can say how bad or how evil Catholicism is, and how the Dark Ages lost us centuries in scientific research, yet say one bad thing about Islam, and suddenly you're a racist.

Why do we put up with this?
To tell a long, detailed story in a short time, in 2005 cartoons depicting the face of the Islamic prophet Muhammad were released to a Danish newspaper, causing the Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons controversy. Protests like the one above were not uncommon to see all around the world, put on by millions of Muslims, yet to the Left, Islam is still a peaceful religion, with a few radicals. In Sunni Islam, it is against some religious rule to depict the face of the Prophet, yet they claim to not worship him. This defies any definition of freedom of press, and is completely and totally ridiculous. Yet we are supposed to respect the opinion that we should me "massacred" or at least punished if we offend somebody by drawing picture of a mere mortal who died hundreds of years ago.

Shi'a Islam does not follow the teachings of Muhammad, yet is still a ridiculous religion. In 1989, after Salman Rushdie wrote The Satanic Verses, a fatwa was issued by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the "Supreme Leader" of Iran, ordering Muslims to kill Mr. Rushdie. There were many attempted murders, so many so that Mr. Rushdie was forced to go in hiding and had a 24-hour armed guard hired to protect him by the British government. All of this violence issued by one of Shi'a Islams leaders. Not to mention the violation of freedom of expression.

This isn't to say that Islam doesn't have honorable principles. Consider that Muslims are expected to let anyone into their house and to treat them as guests, etc., even if that person is their worst enemy. My point, however, is that it is okay to criticize Islam, no matter if its in vogue and is the new Buddhism.
