Does the World Have a Muslim Problem?

Ever since the attacks of 911, people have begun investigating Islam in more detail. It has become widely known that there are extremist groups of Islam such as the jihadists, who spread terror throughout the world. It has also become known that the Quran contains a lot of hatred and propaganda. But is the Quran really so outrageous compared to other world religions?

Christians in particular like to bash Islam, picking and choosing the outrageous passages the Quran contains. However, one could also do the same thing to bible. For example in Deuteronomy 21:18-21, the bible says to kill disobedient children with stones. When asked about this, Christians like to say that some parts of the bible should not be taken literally, and that some passages are to be more or less disregarded. So why should we approach the Quran differently?

Another misconception is that the world solely has an Islamic problem. While it is true that the major terrorists groups we have today come mostly from the extremes of Islam, it is not true that other religions do not or have not done evil. Take the Ku Klux Klan, or the Crusades, or the killings of witches in England as prime examples of the evil other religions have done as a result of their faith. The world does not solely have an Islamic problem, it has a religious problem.

Don't get me wrong, by no means am I defending Islam, the Quran, or jihadists. As an atheist, I find all religions to be equally crazy. What I am suggesting in this post is that we should treat them as such.
